This Defence Standard specifies requirements for adhesive tape supplied in rolls, the performance of which is such that it is suitable for use in packages designed to meet the requirements of Defence Standard 81-41, to a specified Military Level.

This Defence Standard specifies requirements for pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) (Fabric or Plastics film based; suitable for sealing container or barrier joints

This Standard also specifies requirements for gummed paper tape and reinforced gummed paper tape suitable for sealing paper based containers.

These tapes are divided into Types as follows;

a) Type 1; Plastic film based tape; conformable water-resistant; for resealing polyethylene barriers, where a measure of resistance to water is required.

b) Type 2; Fabric based Tape, suitable for making or reinforcing the closures of packages or containers.

c) Type 2a; Fabric based tape, (water-resistant), suitable for making or reinforcing the closures of packages or containers, where a measure of resistance to water is required.

d) Type 3; Plastic film based tape, Transparent, (water-resistant), suitable for protecting paper labels.

e) Type 4; Plastic film based tape, coloured , (water-resistant ), suitable for closing or reinforcing the closures of packages or containers, where a measure of resistance to water is required and where tapes that were supplied to BS 3887 are not suitable.

f) Type 5a; Tape, Kraft Paper, Gummed, suitable for sealing paper based containers.

g) Type 5b; Tape, Reinforced, Kraft Paper, Gummed; suitable for sealing paper based containers.

Note 1: Types 1, 2 and 3 are direct replacements for Def Stan’s 75-1, 75-2, and 75-3 respectively.

Note 2: Type 2a is a direct replacement for Def Stan 81-025

Note 3: Type 4 is a direct replacement for Def Stan 81-047

Note 4 Type 5a and Type 5b is a direct replacement for Def Stan 81-126 Types 1 and 2 respectively
