This standard specifies the requirements for the packaging of individual assembled or unassembled engine pistons and piston sets to Military Levels N and J.

This standard only covers components with a Primary Packaging Quantity (PPQ) of one; that is single or a set. 

A PPQ of one with a maximum mass of contents of 10 kg and sets with a maximum mass of contents of 55 kg are included and may be supplied assembled or unassembled.

All diesel and gasoline engine pistons are included, with the exception of those required for aircraft engines.

Any variation from this standard, e.g., a PPQ of 2 or more, shall require a SPIS Design completed as per Def Stan 81-41 Part 4.
