Fire-rated glazing is specifically designed to control the spread of flame, smoke, hot gases and, if necessary, heat transfer from one area of a building to another. It performs critical life safety functions by allowing building occupants to safely exit a building in the event of fire, while allowing first responders to enter the building. This document explains the basics of fire-rated glazing, including test standards and additional benefits to building occupants and design beyond protection from accidental fire. The Technical Services Division of the National Glass Association (NGA) has produced this Glass Technical Paper solely for informational purposes. This Paper was developed by dedicated member volunteers and subject matter experts. This is the original version of this document. It was approved and published in August 2023.
