This standard applies to all Mk 1 ‘Penguin' style barrier machines used at Automatic Half Barrier Level Crossings.
Purpose
Previously issued documents (NB 056 & SMS test plan LC32B 2.31, now LX70 2.31) have highlighted the need to inspect for modified top ram pins, with grease nipples, and top ram pin clamp assemblies to Mk 1 "Penguin " style barrier machines used at Automatic Half Barrier Level Crossings. A level crossing has been found where this modification has not been done. This has resulted in the issuing of this new Notice Board.
The top ram pin clamp assembly requires to be fitted to prevent the top ram pin turning. The modified top ram pin is fitted with a grease nipple to allow correct lubrication of the ram journal. Both of these modifications are required to reduce the risk of a barrier being held in the raised position when it should be lowered.
