Introduction
This Code of Practice describes the method of calculation of design contact wire wind speed, and its application to conductor blow-off and structure loading.
Wind loading varies with the square of the wind speed, which itself is dependent on area of the country, ground surface roughness, topographical conditions and embankment or viaduct height.
The assessment of wind speeds in sheltered areas is important, even though span lengths may in any case be at the maximum, as masts and foundations will be designed to the applied loads.
The factors KR, KE & KH in this document have been arranged to be used specifically in the context of the overhead. They should not be used for wind estimates in other applications, nor should individual factors be used in isolation of each other to show the separate effect of, for example, embankment height.
