This document applies to Tunnels managed by Network Rail.

The control framework set out in this policy document excludes the following:

a) Occupational health and safety requirements for applying controls;

b) Commercial and contractual responsibilities.

The requirements for the management of structures are set out in NR/L1/CIV/032.

This document does not cover specific requirements for the Examination, Design or Assessment of Tunnels.

For Lined Tunnels, Tunnel Structural Assessments shall be carried out in accordance with NR/L3/CIV/170 “Assessment of Tunnels”.

Purpose

To set out the approach for the management of Tunnels through their lifecycle to meet the requirements in Network Rail’s Tunnels’ Asset Policy and Asset Management Strategy.

To provide a framework to support the operating business to deliver safe, reliable and sustainable Tunnels throughout their lifecycle by mitigating risks to Tunnels managed by Network Rail.
