This module applies to all signalling schemes and detailed design where an interface between main line signalling and a siding, yard or depot is altered or introduced.
The detailed examples reflect lineside signalling practice but the underlying principles can also apply to situations where the main line signalling is a cab signalling system.
The requirements for overlap and trapping are detailed in modules E450 and D410 of the Signalling Principles Handbook.
Purpose
This module forms part of NR/L2/SIG/30009 and is to be read in conjunction with the other documents that form this handbook. The objective of this module is to guide projects on how the risks of operation of trains across infrastructure manager boundaries can be mitigated by application of appropriate signalling controls. Projects will benefit from reference design guidance available without needing to develop interfaces from first principles on each occasion. This module details Network Rail’s policy on the provision of signal controls, and comprises of:
a) mandatory sections;
b) statements of best practice (which should be followed unless an alternative can be demonstrated to be beneficial and no less safe);
c) guidance on historical practices (which are not to be applied to new works but provide information on previous standards or their interpretation).
