PURPOSE:
A WIRE COUNT is a Check that the correct number of wires or conductors is connected to each terminating point as shown on the wiring diagrams and any analysis.
The wire count shall be carried out with all wires terminated and permanently labelled. Care shall be taken to include any links and busbars. If the conductors are cable cores the cable core numbers shall also be checked for agreement with the diagram.
It is not necessary to wire count moulded cables, only the wires on the equipment terminals. Plug couplers should not normally be opened to wire count internally.
If a wire count reveals a discrepancy then this shall be investigated, and if found to be a wiring error it shall be corrected and independently retested.
A CONTINUITY TEST verifies each individual wire or cable core is run between the correct termination points in accordance with the Test Copies, and verifies the wire or cable core is electrically continuous, unless the physical installation is such that it is only possible to hand trace the wire or cable core.
On new installations or equipment, this test shall be carried out with all wires terminated and relay connectors locked into their base positions, but with all relays and CPDs removed and links disconnected.
On existing installations, this test shall be carried out before the termination of new wires or cables cores to operational equipment.
