This instruction applies to all persons engaged in the maintenance and testing of Plessey (Hixon) AHB telephone units.

The maintenance requirements for the Power Plant and Batteries used to support the Plessey units is detailed in NR/L2/TEL/30081 where the installation is supported by a telecoms battery. Some installations derive their d.c power from power supplies maintained by Network Rail signalling engineers which are maintained to the relevant Signalling Maintenance Specifications.

Purpose

This instruction defines the maintenance requirements for Plessey (Hixon) telephone units used as Public Emergency Telephone System at AHB crossings on Network Rail infrastructure.

The purpose of maintaining and testing these telephone units is to decrease the incidence of failures through deterioration and to identify potential failures before they become service affecting.
