This Network Rail document applies to people undertaking surveys of OLE on Network Rail Managed Infrastructure (NRMI) for which a co-ordinated Engineering, or Topographic survey is required for new installation and improvement / enhancement activities within the scope of Governance for Railway Investment Projects controls (NR/L2/INI/P3M/101 for projects and NR/L2/INI/P3M/102 for programmes) but not maintenance activities.

Although this module appears as part of a “Track standard” compliance is also required by the OLE discipline and projects involving new installation, improvement and enhancement but not maintenance activities.

NOTE: Guidance on the various survey techniques most appropriate for the GRIP stages are found in the NR/L2/TRK/3100/MOD03.

Purpose

This module facilitates the creation of a specification for Topographic survey works for Overhead line equipment (OLE) or Overhead contact system (OCS) and provides guidance to projects on specifying and commissioning topographic surveys where the accuracy needs are greater than +/-100 mm in absolute and +/-50mm in relative position.

NOTE 1 These accuracy comments are based on semi or automated methods and the Data collection services (DCS) train measurement fleet.

NOTE 2 This document is not intended to include OLE maintenance measurement activities or duplicate control documents which already exist other than providing a process for topographic surveys.

The risks associated with access to the trackside are minimised by collecting data that is “right first time” and minimising possession requirements.
