This standard specifies the:
a) parameters to promote consistent optical fibre cabling infrastructure throughout Network Rail’s HCFC optical fibre network; and
b) configuration of the network that will enhance its flexibility to support services as they might emerge.
The design principles and parameters set out in this standard apply to all designs that grow, change, renew, or repair Network Rail’s HCFC optical fibre infrastructure and to those responsible for producing, amending, and reviewing the designs.
This standard does not apply to Network Rail’s Fixed Telecoms Network (FTN) or Extended Fixed Telecoms Network (FTNx) (lower fibre-count) fibre cables. Refer to NR/L2/TEL/30160 for those requirements.
Refer to NR/L3/TEL/30162 for jointing, terminating and testing requirements, to NR/GN/TEL/30139 for guidance on cable surveys, and to NR/GN/TEL/30140 installation of new, and refurbishment of existing, cable routes.
Purpose
The purpose of this standard is to set out the principles and considerations that are to be applied when constructing, adding to, modifying, or maintaining Network Rail’s High Capacity Fibre Cable (HCFC) network in the Great Britain(GB) rail corridor.
The principal objectives are to make available the HCFC network’s full potential and to apply a consistent approach that will instil and perpetuate reliability, availability, and maintainability of the optical fibres in the HCFC network.
Compliance with these requirements will optimise the architecture and maximise the performance of Network Rail’s HCFC optical fibre infrastructure and control the risk of its failure to sustain the services and circuits that it supports.
