General
Drivers shall not be confused by signals that are not in use. Any signals that have been erected but not yet brought into use (or have been taken out of use and not removed) shall be easily recognisable..
Signals taken out of use shall be removed as soon as possible. When this cannot be done immediately, all lamps shall be removed and the signals treated as not in use.
Internal masking within the signal casing shall not be used for any form of signal.
NOTE: Internal masking is too easily forgotten or dislodged.
Identification plates shall be covered or reversed when all elements of a signal are not in use.
When only part of a signal is not in use, that part shall not be covered or marked with a cross, since drivers might misinterpret this as applying to the whole signal.
Check that any covering is well secured.
Make a note in your log book of all the signals that have been masked or otherwise treated so that this information can be passed on to testing staff.
