This document applies to the lifting, storage, and transportation of the following products once they are owned by Network Rail:

1) rails;

2) insulated rail joints;

3) sleepers and bearers;

4) half sets of switches;

5) crossings; and

6) S&C and plain line panels.

This standard does not apply to rail transportation of materials.

This standard is aimed at general use equipment such as excavators, cranes and forklift trucks. Any specialist equipment should be governed by its own product acceptance.

Purpose

This document provides a process to control the risk of damage to track materials during lifting, storage and transportation.

This standard does not supersede any current requirements, it is in addition to the regulations surrounding lifting or lift planning of materials. These are:

        Lifting operations and lifting regulations 1998 (LOLER)

        Provision and Use of Work Equipment regulations (1998) (PUWER)

        The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) regulations (1986)
