This standard specifies how members of the Engineering function manage safety when making site visits. A site visit is any activity that is not carried out in an office or similar low-risk environment.

This standard is for use in conjunction with existing processes for Work Activity Risk Assessments as specified in NR/SP/OHS/00112 and the establishment of Safe Systems of Work (SSOW).

Where generic permission is given by managers for regular activities or a series of site visits, the requirements of this standard still apply.

NOTE If managers are in doubt if this standard applies, guidance can be obtained from the Health & Safety Specialist (Engineering).

Purpose

This Network Rail standard describes the activities that aid a risk-based approach to the identification, management and implementation of the necessary safe systems of work to protect people from operational and work related risks.
