This work instruction applies to Contractors and Network Rail employees undertaking the application and reapplication of protective coating systems to Network Rail’s infrastructure, except for rails and other track components. This work instruction covers the use of coating systems for the corrosion protection and fire protection of structural steelwork, and for the protection of timber, concrete,and masonry structures.
NOTE: Details of procedures for undertaking coating and corrosion surveys are provided in Appendix A.
This work instruction does not apply to:
a) minor works;
b) maintenance works: and
c) when the work is completed within short possessions (e.g. when there
insufficient time to allow the protective coating to be applied, including curing,
in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations).
NOTE: In such cases a ‘do best’ approach under the direction and approval of the Engineer with regard to, for example, surface preparation, coating application and containment should be adopted.
This standard is to be used in conjunction with NR/GN/CIV/002 and NR/L3/CIV/039.
Guidance and background information are provided in NR/GN/CIV/002 ‘The use of protective coatings and sealants’.
NR/L3/CIV/039 details how coating materials are certified.
Purpose
This work instruction defines the selection and use of protective coating systems for Network Rail’s infrastructure.
Protective coatings are applied and reapplied to:
a) preserve and protect the infrastructure so that it provides the required service life in the most cost-effective manner;
b) in some cases, the colour of the final coat complies with regulations that govern the safe operation of the railway; and/or
c) to satisfy aesthetic requirements.
