This procedure applies to all Managed Station employees and station cleaning contractors and relates specifically to the hazards posed by infected human body fluids or other tissues where they penetrate the skin either through needle stick injury or through any open wound (such as a cut or graze).
PURPOSE
To gain assurance that all members of staff who may be at risk of needle stick injuries, or who come into contact with blood or other body fluids have been briefed on the nature of the hazards. This procedure also makes sure that employees are provided with all the necessary tools and personal protective equipment prior to undertaking any task with the potential to expose them to hazard. Also it provides guidance to make sure that all employees are equipped to deal with the risks from biological hazards such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Hepatitis B & C Viruses as a result of coming into contact with human body fluids or other tissues, or with contaminated sharps such as needles.
Effective risk management and development of safe working practice will eliminate or significantly reduce the risk of infection through health awareness and effective skin care.
