This procedure applies to all works and activities carried out by Network Rail Maintenance Employees and Sub Contractors where there is a risk of damage to, or danger from Surface or Buried Services.

The particular types of activities can be summarised as (but are not limited to) the following:-

• Site investigation and Survey Works

• Excavation

• Insertion of spikes, probes, piles or posts

Purpose

This procedure sets out the requirements to ensure that when a safe system of work is being established, that attention is paid to the likelihood of any surface or buried services in the vicinity of the work that could affect the safe execution of that work and the safety of those involved in the work.
