This SIN applies to all Single Rod Arthur Flury Neutral Sections installed in Network Rail infrastructure (all line speeds). All future orders will include these design features by default.
Background and purpose
There have been a number of recent pan damage incidents associated with the introduction of Arthur Flury single rod neutral sections in high speed lines. This has resulted in an update to the design and associated product approval of this component.
The design now includes an additional lever which flexes the contact wire/insulation ferrule joint upwards at the interface between the contact wire and the ferrule. The pantograph will then be subject to less of a hard spot and hence an improved transition across this interface joint.
This is now the only approved product for AF Single Rod Neutral Sections for use on Network Rail Infrastructure.
The lever assembly (see picture 2) includes a new leading arcing horn which has been improved by the addition of a strengthening bar.
The cost of the upgrade per unit is £440.00 for the kit of parts and a marginal labour cost of £284 - giving a total cost of £724 per unit.
The total number of in scope Neutral Sections is 156, this is based on 52 - LNW(N), 69 - LNW(S), 4 - LNE and 31 – Anglia. Total estimated cost is therefore circa £113k.
