This specification defines the requirements for axle counters on new and existing signalling schemes. It is applicable where the signalling system uses only axle counters for train detection, and where it uses a mixture of axle counters and track circuits, with axle counter and track circuits adjoining.

A number of different axle counter system architectures are possible when using axle counters within a signalling system. This Specification does not mandate a particular architecture. Instead it defines the functionality pertaining to axle counters that must be provided by the part or parts of the overall signalling system that incorporate the axle counter.

Purpose

This Specification is for systems providing train detection using axle counters. It defines the requirements of such a system, and specifies the interfaces with which such a system is required to work.
