This document covers interference with cabled fixed operational telecommunications systems only and does not include

  • analysis of interference to signalling, electrification and other equipment which may result from connections carried through lineside telecommunications systems
  • the effects of resonance, which must be addressed separately
  • retail telecommunications systems
  • third party systems (either side of the railway boundary)
  • train-borne systems

Other generic types of lineside system not covered by this document are included within the scope of RT/E/C/50014 and other specific documents (see, for example, RT/E/C/50011 Axle Counters, which includes interference effects within the transmission line).

As the methodology involves defining limits for the transverse voltage at terminal equipment, the limits are applicable to all routes.

Purpose

This document provides a methodology to ensure electromagnetic compatibility with operational telecommunications equipment and systems adjacent to the AC and DC electrified railway on Network Rail controlled infrastructure. This is achieved by:

  • identifying generic types of safety-related, operational telecommunications equipment and systems present on Network Rail controlled infrastructure
  • determining maximum tolerable levels of interference at the terminal equipment
  • defining limits of interference at the terminal equipment due to rolling stock
  • compatibility argument

This methodology will facilitate the demonstration of compatibility of rolling stock with operational telecommunications equipment and systems, as part of a Route Acceptance Safety Case.
