The term point ends means any of the following: -
a) A facing point.
b) A trailing point.
c) A swing nose crossing.
d) Each half of a switch diamond crossing (a switch diamond crossing counts as two ends).
e) All forms of trap point.
f) A derailer.
g) A scotch block.
Purpose
Two recent accidents have been caused because points had been secured in the wrong position during emergency working.
To ensure that emergency working and engineering work can be carried out safely it is essential that all point ends are correctly numbered and staff can be certain which is the normally closed switch.
This Inspection Notice sets out the action which is required to check that all point ends are correctly numbered.
