A temperature-boosting-type absorption heat pump is proposed in order to upgrade low-temperature-level energy to a higher level. The applications are focused on industrial temperature levels, more than 140 deg C in most cases. The working fluids couple investigated here is TFE (trifluorethanol) and E181 (dimethylether tetraethylene glycol), which is very attractive for its thermal stability and noncorrosivity. This work is based on a simulation model of the absorption heat transformer, which allows a study of the influence of the main parameters, available heat source temperature level, and cooling source temperature. Results are very interesting compared with conventional heat pumps, and 60 deg C of temperature boosting is reached from 80 deg to 90 deg C waste heat with a coefficient of performance (COP) as high as 48%. A new type of cycle is presented, one that is very efficient for temperature boosting in the case of low waste heat temperatures. For example, 100 deg to 110 deg C can be obtained from 40 deg C waste heat with a condensing temperature as high as 26 deg C, although a high COP cannot be expected.
