3896 -- The Analysis of Deep Basement Heat Loss by Measurements and Calculations PDF

Presented are measured data for three deep basement configurations with results yielded by Mitalas, ASHRAE, European Standard methods, and a two-dimensional finite element method program (2D FEM program). The Mitalas method was in best agreement with measurements. The analysis of results suggested that uninsulated basement parts adjacent to the corner cause the main portion of disagreement predicted and measured heat loss as well as disagreement among the methods studied, and that this is in accordance to and a reflection of differences in the physical models of these methods. Also investigated are the influences of temperature boundary conditions and of the thermal properties of different types of soil on predicted heat loss.
