Historically, people have spent approximately 90% of their time in indoor spaces, with a large majority of this time approximately 70% spent in their homes. Since the global COVID-19 pandemic, this has altered many aspects of daily life, including the rise of remote work, causing residential energy use and demand changes along with household schedules change. This paper explores how household occupancy schedules and activities have changed from 2020 to 2022 using the latest American Time Use Survey (ATUS) data and compares these trends to the pre-pandemic period. This research also evaluates how these trends are impacted by socio-demographic factors such as age, household size, and employment status. This analysis can provide insights into future trends of the evolving role of homes as both workplaces and personal spaces, and what implications this has on electric grid operations and the domestic environment. In the current analysis, trends suggest that occupancy substantially increased in 2020 and has slowly declined since then but has not returned to pre-pandemic levels. In addition, these patterns differ across different demographics. The results of this research signify the need for more focus on housing indoor environmental conditions, ventilation, and energy use patterns, given the changing use of our homes.
