Various air cleaning technologies have been developed to protect public health by removing air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM), microorganisms, and gaseous compounds. To enhance indoor air quality, multifunctional air purifiers, which combine various techniques, have been developed. However, systematic reviews that examine the combinations of air cleaning technologies and their interactive effects are seldom conducted. In this study, an up-to-date review of the evaluation of multifunctional air purification systems (MFAPS) is provided, with a particular focus on the removal of PM and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Current ASHRAE and ISO standards on in-duct filtration system were comprehensively reviewed. Moreover, this study reviewed experimental and modeling work regarding the ultraviolet photocatalytic oxidation (UV-PCO) on microorganism disinfection and VOC removal. Consequently, a general guideline for evaluating the performance of UV-PCO-integrated MFAPS is proposed. This study offers a critical overview of the design of integrated air purification systems and contributes to the development of future standards in this field.
