To classify an exhaust stack configuration as acceptable or unacceptable, an accurate estimate of the source emissions must be made and an acceptability criterion must be established that accounts for odour potential and health effects of the exhaust stack at the location of concern. The acceptability of a stack design hinges not only on the wind-tunnel test results, but also on the type of source, the anticipated frequency of operation, the local wind climate, the quantity emitted, and the toxicity or annoyance of the chemicals being released. Estimates the emission factors of sources based on published literature and mass transfer analogies and uses experience to develop acceptability criteria for diesel generators, boiler exhausts, and chemical fume hood exhausts. Describes these criteria and the methodology used in their development.

KEYWORDS: wind tunnels, calculating, flues, designing, exhaust gases, odour, health, testing, boilers, generators, exhaust hoods, pipe stacks
