This paper presents the results of RP-1140, “Establishing a Baseline Data Set for the Evaluation of Hybrid HVAC Systems” intended to aid developers of radiant simulation modules. The project successfully demonstrated the use of radiant panels for both heating and cooling, in conjunction with ventilation/dehumidification units, to achieve thermal comfort in a residence. The environmental system includes high mass walls, insulated on the exterior, and radiant panels in both the ceiling and the floor mass supplied by a hydronic source (ground-source heat pump). Ceiling panels are used primarily for summer cooling and the floor panel system is used primarily for winter heating. The control strategy uses envelope thermal mass to keep the space operative temperature within the comfort envelope using mostly off -peak electrical energy, with less than one hour of on-peak compressor time per day. The final report provides two years of performance data, extensive details, performance graphs, simulation work, and animations to visualize the invisible. A web site (http:// support.caed.asu.edu/radiant) provides an overview of the project.
