The user of adjustable speed drives (ASDs) promises large energy savings but may increase power quality problems among utility customers. Presents results of a detailed power quality monitoring study of ASD use in three industries (food processing, pulp and paper manufacturing, and waste-water operations). Also summarises the results of a telephone questionnaire of ASD use in these three industries and identifies successful power quality mitigation techniques that can be employed by both the utilities and their customers.
