These requirements cover asbestos-cement pressure pipe, couplings, and gaskets for use in underground, fire service systems and connections to such systems.
The pipe consists of either the distribution or transmission type.
Requirements for the installation and use of asbestos-cement distribution pipe and couplings are included in the Standard of the National Fire Protection
Association for Outside Protection, ANSI/NFPA No. 24, the Standard for Installation of Private Fire Service Mains and Their Appurtenances and the Standard for
the Installation of Asbestos-Cement Pressure Pipe, ANSI/AWWA C603.
Requirements for the installation and use of asbestos-cement transmission pipe and couplings are included in the Standard for the Selection of Asbestos-Cement
Transmission Sizes 18 in. Through 42 in. (450 mm Through 1,050 mm), for Water Supply Service, ANSI/AWWA C403 and the Standard for the Installation of
Asbestos-Cement Pressure Pipe, ANSI/AWWA C603.
A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems new or different from those covered by the requirements in this standard, and
that involves a risk of fire or of electric shock or injury to persons shall be evaluated using appropriate additional component and end-product requirements to
maintain the level of safety as originally anticipated by the intent of this standard. A product whose features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems conflict
with specific requirements or provisions of this standard does not comply with this standard. Revision of requirements shall be proposed and adopted in conformance
with the methods employed for development, revision, and implementation of this standard.
