The following constitutes an interim report of progress on the investigations of the hot ductility of high-temperature materials and covers work completed by Mar. 15, 1956. The effect of weld thermal cycles on the elevated-temperature properties of 34 different materials has been studied and the results of these tests are discussed in this report. Eleven different heats of Type 347 stainless steels were studied, together with 23 other heats of high-temperature structural materials of 16 different alloy types.

The results of the hot-ductility tests appear to correlate with service behavior wherever the service behavior was known, and the test shows promise of becoming an extremely valuable tool in the study of the factors leading to cracking difficulties in high-temperature materials. The results of the hot-ductility test show marked differences between the elevated-temperature properties of different alloys, and also detect significant differences in the effect of similar weld thermal cycles on the elevated-temperature properties of different heats of the same material.
