Part 1: Vibration Damping of Heat Exchanger Tube Bundles in Two-Phase Flow

Two-phase flow exists in many shell-and-tube heat exchangers such as condensers, evaporators and nuclear steam generators. To avoid flow-induced vibration problems, it is necessary to have some information on tube damping mechanisms.

This report pertains to the development of a model to formulate damping in two-phase cross-flow. This formulation is based on information available in the literature and particularly on the results of a recently completed experimental program. The compilation of a data base, the development of a semi-empirical model and the formulation of design guidelines are discussed in this report. The calculation of heat exchanger tube damping in two-phase cross-flow is illustrated by an example.

Part 2: Acoustic Resonance in Heat Exchanger Tube Bundles

A series of experiments has been made on aeroacoustic tones produced by flow over tubes in a duct. The sound is characterized by the onset of a loud and persistent acoustic resonance. The acoustic resonance occurs at the frequency of the acoustic modes. The magnitude and extent of the resonance are functions of tube pattern and tube pitch. The sound levels increase in proportion with Mach number, dynamic head and pressure drop. A design procedure for predicting the magnitude of the sound within the tube array is presented. Methods of resonance avoidance are illustrated. An example is made for a large petrochemical heat exchanger.
