Commercial, industrial and institutional customers can use a significant amount of water in their
daily operations. Effective water use surveys using simple tools and calculation shortcuts that
show the economic benefits of a water efficiency measure are most appreciated by the customer.
Higher customer awareness can lead to increased participation to implement potential
conservation measures. This paper presents different tools to help measure, calculate and present the economic benefits of water efficiency in many commercial, industrial and institutional applications. The paper includes examples of basic tables that convert
water use from gallons per day into total costs per year, along with a section that provides a spreadsheet
for calculating water savings associated with increasing the cycles of concentration in cooling
towers. A third section provides information on selecting water efficient nozzles and calculating
water and energy savings for equipment cleaning operations. The final section provides shortcuts
to estimate CII water treatment efficiency and calculate water and energy savings for sites that
must further purify potable water supplies for their own uses. Includes tables.
