This paper gives a brief overview of United Kingdom (UK) processes for design, principally structural design, of pipelines of
different materials. For context, it makes some comparisons with practice in U.S. manuals, covering differences in
traffic loads, native and backfill soil stiffnesses and concludes that it is important not to mix methods. It describes
background to the UK approach to native soil stiffness. It also addresses thrust blocks and cyclic loading on
plastic pipes and includes sections on exposed (non-buried) pipelines and covers transport of air pockets in water
pipelines. It highlights areas for improved knowledge sharing and research. Includes 35 references, tables, figures.
