This slide presentation outlines information on three options for validation testing. Topics covered include: ultraviolet (UV) reactor validation issues, approaches, costs, and pros/cons; off-site validation at manufacturer facility (case study of Seattle Public Utilities' Cedar
Design-Build-Operate Project); off-site validation at test center (case study of Poughkeepsie's (NY) Water
Treatment Facility); on-site validation (case studies of City of Henderson, Nevada and Clayton County Water Authority, Georgia); and a "hybrid" approach (case study of City of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada). Lessons learned include: validation testing is essential to prove UV
disinfection effectiveness;
US Environmental Protection Agency published detailed test protocol for
implementation by primacy agencies, with flexibility
for where validation testing is conducted;
test conditions significantly impact operations costs;
there are several different options available for
testing, but there is no "one size fits all";
selecting approach is important step in project
implementation; and,
site-specific factors will influence the decision.
