This powerpoint presentation begins by providing background information on waterborne pathogens and goes on to outline topics that include: sources of contamination;
index and indicator organisms;
defining and interpreting;
local, national and international
recommendations and standards; and,
personal suggestions. Conclusions were that: currently, Escherichia coli is the most reliable
microbiological indicator of faecal pollution;
no single water quality indicator can meet the
diversity of needs for all water sources; "An ounce (gram) of prevention is better than a
pound (kilo) of cure"; and,
source water protection is an essential
intervention strategy in a multi-barrier approach. Includes 2 references.
