This powerpoint presentation begins by providing characteristics of pathogens, and then lists issues with pathogens that include: trapping and retention of organisms from contamination events;
growth of opportunistic pathogens; potential for release; less susceptible to disinfection; pathogens in amoeba;
possibility that there may be
inhibition (good thing) from
indigenous organisms; and,
detection can be problematic. Newer experimental methods are presented and include the following:
use of molecular methods; preferential
detection of "live" cells; and,
microscopy to detect colonization and
persistence. Presentation summary includes: pathogens are integrated into biofilms;
ability to grow and/or persist depends
on organism and environmental
conditions; and,
better tools are needed to detect them
in distribution systems. Includes figures.
