Direct application of chlorite into water distribution systems has been shown to be an effective alternative to minimize nitrification. Experiments were conducted to investigate the inhibition of the ammonia oxidizing bacteria activity in batch scale. The concentration-contact time (CT) concept was applied to explain the rate of activity during the nitrification inhibition. A 99% inhibition of activity was used as criteria to develop a CT equation. Includes 7 references, tables, figure.
