This powerpoint presentation begins by providing an outline of the presentation that includes the following: ClO2 and its byproducts in distribution
systems;
occurrence of ClO<sub>2</sub>, ClO<sub>2</sub><sup>-</sup> and ClO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>;
fate of ClO<sub>2</sub>, ClO<sub>2</sub><sup>-</sup> and ClO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>;
effect of ClO<sub>2</sub> on water quality;
tastes and odors;
natural organic matter (NOM), biomass, and nitrification; and,
corrosion. Presentation summary and conclusions indicate the following:
fate of ClO<sub>2</sub> in distributions systems;
decrease with increasing water age when
ClO<sub>2</sub> is used as residual disinfectant;
ClO<sub>2</sub> may reform in presence of Cl<sub>2</sub>;
fate of ClO<sub>2</sub><sup>-</sup> in distributions systems;
variable, no trends;
decrease with increasing water age; fate of ClO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup> in distribution systems;
generally stable when ClO2 is used as
residual disinfectant;
increase in presence of Cl2; formation of offensive odors at
customers' houses when ClO2 is used as
residual disinfectant;
successful cases;
variable effects of ClO<sub>2</sub> on biomass; may help control nitrification;
effects of ClO2 on corrosion:
may not promote corrosion anymore than Cl2M/sub>
or monochloramine;
corrosion byproducts reduce ClO2 into ClO2-,
then Cl-. Includes tables, figures.
