This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of distribution system water quality. A new design paradigm is presented of reversing the design concept that has
existed for nearly 200 years by
designing potable systems with 2 to 4-inch lines, and
designing reclaimed water systems to handle fire
flow and reclaimed water uses. Such a switch in design conditions promotes
highly treated potable water to meet future
water quality demands without inherent system
issues caused by large diameter pipes
needed to provide fire flow. The presentation examines producing easily accessible reclaimed
water for a variety of uses by centralized vs decentralized systems, provides criteria for satellite treatment, considerations for treatment technology selection, retrofitting a community, and presents a hypothetical example of using dual distribution systems at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
