Inima USA Corporation and Aquaria Water, LLC recently constructed a desalination plant on the Taunton River in
Dighton, Massachusetts. To protect aquatic resources, they installed a Filtrex Filtration System comprised of racks
of candles through which water from the river was withdrawn. The pore size (40 µm) of the Filtrex candles was
sufficiently small to prevent entrainment of all ichthyoplankton and other small organisms. The low through-pore
velocity (0.2 ft/s) prevented impingement of juvenile and adult fish. To determine susceptibility of
ichthyoplankton to impingement, Inima/Aquaria contracted Alden to conduct tests in a small, laboratory flume with
eggs and larvae of the primary species of interest (blueback herring and alewife). The tests were designed to
estimate impingement rates and survival of each species and life stage tested. Includes tables.
