The production and control of ozone disinfection byproducts (DBPs) requires careful consideration. Avoiding bromate formation or finding an effective treatment for its removal must be addressed. In addition, biodegradation must follow ozone treatment to ensure reduction of ozone DBPs, precursors to chlorine DBPs, and assimilable organic carbon. Filter-adsorbers can support a biofilm, although determining the proper contact time is a key issue to be resolved on a case-by-case basis. The limitations of biodegradation must be recognized, particularly with regard to removal of NOM, the precursor material to chlorine DBPs. Membrane technology offers a potentially viable alternative for NOM removal although cost is of concern and experience is limited. This paper details the formation of ozone and peroxone DBPs step by step through the treatment train, then discusses biodegradation in general, granular activated carbon in particular, and membrane processes, for treating and preventing formation of DBPs.
