The objectives of this presentation were to provide: details of the prototype seeding experiments and Cryptosporidium removal results undertaken by the Sydney Water Corporation and Australian Water Services Joint Action Group, formed to assist the government inquiry investigating the possible causes of the contamination of the Sydney water supply in 1998; and, an assessment of the usefulness of potential indicator parameters for Cryptosporidium such as particle counts in specific size ranges, algae and aerobic spores. The objective of the prototype testing was to develop a better understanding of the performance of the Prospect Water Filtration Plant by testing in a controlled environment to: determine the level of treatment achieved at typical low raw water turbidities, with the level of treatment defined by the removal of turbidity, particles, Cryptosporidium, spores and algae; and, determine the level of treatment achieved using raw water with elevated turbidity and color, which is typical of raw water thought to contain elevated Cryptosporidium and Giardia concentrations. The testing included initial and final Cryptosporidium seeding runs performed under three different conditions of raw and filtered water quality. The prototype plant operations staff performed the initial two Cryptosporidium seeding runs with direction from the Joint Action Group. Cryptosporidium analyses for these initial seeding runs were performed by Thames Water Utilities. Clancy Environmental Consultants (CEC), in conjunciton with the prototype plant operations staff, performed the final three Cryptosporidium seeding runs. CEC performed all Cryptosporidium analyses for the final seeding runs.
