Spreadsheets such as Excel and Lotus have enjoyed a tremendous amount of
popularity in the water industry. To enhance spreadsheet capabilities, add-ins or
supplemental programs are developed and integrated into the spreadsheets by users
or specialized third-party vendors. This paper discusses the efforts of the
Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWDSC) to incorporate
commercially available add-ins as optimization tools (linear programming,
non-linear programming and genetic algorithms), with spreadsheet models used for
distribution system planning and scheduling. Includes 3 references.
