The task of developing a Crisis Communications Plan for Mount Pleasant Waterworks (MPW) required a careful review
of MPW's Emergency Preparedness Manual, a review of the organization's leadership and responsibilities, and a
pragmatic assessment of what would actually happen if and when there is a major crisis. The communications plan that
evolved complements, enhances, and, in some instances, streamlines MPW's Emergency Preparedness Manual, while
incorporating those elements of AWWA's Crisis Communications Plan Template that are appropriate for MPW.
Using AWWA's Crisis Communications Plan Template as a framework, the plan addresses issues associated with
communicating with the media, employees, key customers, and the general public during crisis situations. The project
assessment of MPW's Emergency Preparedness Manual resulted in recommendations for enhancing communication
during a crisis, streamlining and making the communication process more efficient and effective, and offered MPW the
option of identifying those tasks they wanted to do and those with which they needed help from others.
