This paper describes the CRISTAL(R) process as a polishing treatment selected by Lyonnaise des Eaux for an exisitng plant upgrade. Its objective was to improve and make the distributed water quality more reliable. The new treatments installed were oxidation using ozone and powdered activated carbon (PAC)/ultrafiltration (UF) combination. These treatments were designed to: remove a maximum of organic matter (total organic carbon content below 1 mg/l) in order to ensure a good organoleptic quality of the treated water; distribute water with a better quality than that required by European standards, more specifically with respect to pesticides, microorganisms and particles; and, adapt the treatment to the quality variations of Seine river water. The operation of this treatmnet step was started during the course of the summer of 1997 and was connected to the distribution network in the fall of 1997. The main design parameters are discussed. Includes 5 references, tables, figures.
