Drinking water systems are supposed to transport only dissolved matter, so that the presence of transparent or very small (less than 50 um) particles can reveal a deterioration of water quality. Particles in distribution systems may have several origins. The purpose of this study was to identify those processes affecting the nature and quantity of particles in drinking water (i.e. to determine which particles are transported in which part of the distribution system). The quantity and nature of particulate matter in both the treated and distributed water of the Nancy Metropolitan area in France, were investigated. Particles were concentrated from large volumes of water and then subjected to detailed elemental analysis. The particulate concentrations and the corresponding organic and mineral fractions were then compared throughout the system. These values were then compared with standard values and the results of a previous study involving loose deposits.
