The objective of this study was to evaluate, in parallel, endocrine disruptions of both estrogenic and
thyroid hormone peripheral functions generated by complex mixtures of organic
micropollutants.
Water samples were collected in two major wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) of the greater Paris
area. Treatment processes are different where one is based on
classical activated sludge steps (600 000 m3/day) and the other on biofilters (240 000 m(sup>3/day).
Samples were taken at the inlet and outlet of the WWTPs and in the river Seine downstream of
the discharge and at the intake of drinking treatment plants producing water for the Paris
suburb.
Chemicals were isolated from collected waters by SPE extraction (Waters - OASIS
cartridges) and were tested using two cellular models for estrogenic (MELN) and thyroid
disruption evaluations. Prior to the assessment of the estrogenic and THs activities, the cytotoxicity of the compounds
for the cells was investigated using the MTT assay (Mosmann, 1983). Includes 6 references.
