The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is in the process of implementing pilot contamination warning systems at multiple drinking water
utilities. The insight gained from these efforts has identified several practical and low cost activities a
utility could perform to significantly increase their level of preparedness, when responding to and
evaluating a potential contamination incident. The objective of this poster presentation is to highlight
some of these low cost actions. The recommended
preparatory activities focus on the following activities:
initiate outreach and communication to the other organizations participating in a potential
hazardous contamination event;
set roles and responsibilities with these organizations and practice contamination response
events;
actively monitor the components that would likely warn the utility of a contamination event; and,
build awareness of the laboratory capabilities that are present in your locality and establish a
laboratory network. Includes tables.
