A new method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 5-iodo-2'-
deoxyuridine (IDU), 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU), 5-iodouracil (IU) and 5-
bromouracil (BU) in potable water and surface water. The target analytes were preconcentrated
using solid phase extraction, and then were well separated by HPLC on a
reversed-phase C18 column with 10 mM phosphate-acetonitrile-methanol as the
mobile phase. Ultraviolet absorption detection and inductively coupled plasma mass
spectrometry (ICP-MS) detection were compared in terms of simplicity, sensitivity
and selectivity. Solid phase extraction was used to pre-treat water samples. Potable
water and surface water were analyzed using this developed method, and the results
were lower than detection limits. Includes 11 references, table, figures.
