The regulatory experience with biological processes varies widely. Some processes are familiar to drinking water professionals in North America, while others are novel. This novelty is especially true for biological nitrate and perchlorate removal. Currently, there are no full-scale drinking water treatment plants that intentionally use biological processes to remove nitrate or perchlorate in the United States. The various types of biological treatment covered in this paper include: slow sand filtration; ozone enhanced rapid rate filtration; biologically active carbon; bank filtration; biological iron and manganese removal; and, biological nitrate and perchlorate removal. Includes 39 references, table.
